Joyce ran the shop in Chapel Street until 1958 both with her mum Eliza Slack and with Edwin. It was an off-license at one point and a general store which sold sweets among other things and also had a small library. Originally William Bull, Eliza’s dad, had a pub and then switched to the off-licence, this was to become Eliza’s shop. William died quite young (49). That shop was rented from the brewery. The shop was just ticking over when Edwin said he’d take it over and pay Eliza what she’d already been getting, any extra was for Joyce and Edwin. They made a success of it. Eliza died quite young (55) and Willis had malaria from his time in India. Willis married again and moved away. Joyce always wanted to sell fashion clothes and this is what they did on moving to Whittlesey.
